Week 9 Personal Philosophy

What is personal philosophy?

“A personal philosophy is a frame of mind that guides your perspectives on all things inyour life. A personal philosophy is a way of life.” (Answers.com)

Welcome to week 9! I am excited about this weeks topic because it is such a important and deep topic, and we can all learn a lot from each other!

Our experiences create our knowledge and memories, and these guide our emotions and reasoning abilities. It is important to have a belief system, which is made up of your own personal values. All of this will make up your attitude and your approach to situations in life! Every decision that you make, reflects who you are. Our personal philosophy will determine the quality of our decisions and ultimately our lives.

Know your personal philosophy and share them this week!

  1. How does your personal philosophy play into your professional life?

  2. Is your personal philosophy interdisciplinary? How so?

  3. Have your career goals evolved? In what way?

Be sure to give feedback to at least one peer this week. This week is a great topic to learn from each other and give your peers positive feedback!

  1. My own personal philosophy on life concerning my career can be hard to determined yet at the same time exciting to find. I tend to find myself looking at reflection as a big part of my philosophy. I find myself now only looking back at myself, but others such as family and friends or whether it be some or something one that has influenced me with my own person philosophy to better it. In my eyes I have yet to have a solid philosophy in the aspect of my career , because I am still searching to find what it is that I want, and I think that through the aspects I go about this at the moment alone shows incorporation of interdisciplinary in more ways than one.
I for one have experienced many different types of classroom involvement/internship like experiences within classes I have taken at UCF. I for one found it as an excellent way to help develop a personal professional development within a career, Hand on experience can be helpful in learning, evaluating, and reflecting upon in different aspects. I personally feel that a not even just one of these are enough, unless having exposure to different environments as well. Exposure to these different environments can help us determine what we do and do not like within, and as we evaluate the different career pathways it better helps us determine the pathway of development we should further, When doing education the community service internships within I had one that I hated, and then another that I ended up loving. However, like I said above, reflecting we can learn from and in turn dissect what we did and did not like and accommodate that into our own professional life.
Through college I worked mostly as a bartender. Even though this was not my career path, when I did get a job that I wanted to start my career it helped within because of the guest service and even because of the situations that I would have being in the job position and being able to hand them in a professions way. I also learned excellent communication skills and with all of these “soft skills” combined and the interdisciplinary aspect, I am on my way to my career. As I have these skills and continue to develop more and enhance the ones I have, I will only hope that it helps me achieve my career further.
As I experience my own life and reflect back upon my career goals have greatly altered. I went from an education major to business, and then now to IDS where I could combine those two and add humanities on as well. I found myself not changing but incorporating and altering within to find a path that would make me happy in a career and development along the ways. I at first was scared to make a change like this and now I feel I could not have made a better choice because of what I have learned about perceptions on careers and most certainly different aspects of my life in general.

  2. Your personal philosophy plays a huge role in your professional career. Every decision that you make revolves around what you to be the wrong or right decision. They way you look at things is huge in growing with a company. If we personal thinks its right, you are putting your views not only to your self but to those who our around you as well. Our personal philosophy is based on past experiences we had and is looked at as knowledge that we obtained that we share with other in the real world.
My personal philosophy is interdisciplinary, I always look at things in so many different ways. Not one person thinks alike and I feel that every one uses more than one philosophy. Its good because you have to understand that everyone is different and that they will have different views. So your personal philosophy plays a role on what is around you and what it all means to your self. Such as in life, work, and school.
My career skills have evolved because I feel that I am now evolving into a smarter person. I feel everyday we get older its a lie changing experience, we put forth on to what we see our career as. I personally use my life to help my career. Everyone you meet and put your self towards, pushes me to that next level in my career. I have always had interesting conversation with people and will continue doing so to help advance myself in my career.

  3. Our differences is what makes this such a great world! Everyone has different experiences, different points of view, and can bring something to our lives. We always must respect each others differences and can only benefit us to embrace them. We all are unique based on our past experiences, and by that, we have so much to offer!

  4. My personal philosophy is “It is not a mistake if you have learned a lesson from it”.
My personal philosophy plays into my professional life in many ways. I think that it is important to look at every situation as an opportunity to learn. We cannot dwell on everything we may not have done correctly. Rather we need to pick ourselves up and take what we have learned and try again. This is the only way I will be able to move up within the company and supply my members with the best service possible.
I do not if my personal philosophy is interdisciplinary. One way to look at it as interdisciplinary is if you consider that I am learning by different means each time. I am able to solve a problem by combining what I know, what I did wrong, and new ideas.
My career goals have evolved since entering college. Before I did not have specific goals set for myself but since I started taking classes and researching different career opportunities that all changed. I know realize that I am not confined to one position or career.

  5. A personal philosophy plays a crucial role in the development of the professional life by mandating the guidelines, and norms of how to effectively perform a specific occupation. My personal philosophy is reflected in my professional life highlighting my integrity as a person, my morals, and my commitment to my profession.
My personal philosophy is the result of the integration of many thoughts, life lessons, and advice I have received from important influential people; therefore, making my philosophy a compilation of sources that merge together to form one joint philosophy.
My career goals have enhanced, now that I am so close to graduating I have really begun to think about what comes next. My education is one of my biggest priorities and I am constantly looking to find the right path for my development.

  6. 1.My life philosophy is not to leave anything that can be done today for tomorrow. I hate procrastination. I always try to stay on top of everything and do everything on time or even earlier. I think it is a good quality in professional life. I also treat everybody with respect and expect the same from everyone. My philosophy is not to do anything to anyone that I do not want to be done to myself.
    2. My philosophy is not interdisciplinary, it is more general and applied to every aspect of one’s life.
    3. My career goals became stronger and I started to feel that they will become true. I became more confident about that. This class also opened my eyes on my field and showed me how my areas will integrate in my career. Thus, I might say that my career goals evolved to higher level.

  7. @ Nikim: I love yours and totally agree. Whatever does not break us-- make us stronger. That is kind of the same philosophy. Learning is the best way we can enlight our lives and it is also great way to grow.

    ReplyDelete
  8. @ Cidney: you are absolutely right. Our past is what makes us who we are. Without our previous experience we would not be even close to who we are. Our world views are formed by events that we went trough.

  9. Interdisciplinary has opened my eyes as well, over the course of my studies, to learn and understand how I benefit from being a IDS student, and now, how it plays into my personal and professional perspectives. We learn, that we can pull from so many different areas to help define who we are, that it has made me feel even more unique with what I have to offer!

  10. @agaas...
You brought up some great philosophies! Procrastination is only beneficial to avoid, and the old "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This is great words to live by in both professional and personal setting. Ethics needs to be a ever important part of who we are, the foundation for all else that we do.

  11. 1. How does your personal philosophy play into your professional life?
    2. Is your personal philosophy interdisciplinary? How so?
    3. Have your career goals evolved? In what way?

    1. My personal philosophy plays a very important roll in my professional life. My beliefs and principles make me who I am today. I believe that if I am honest with myself and understand my priorities I can find myself pretty content with my life and everything I do.
    2. I believe so because I apply my personal philosophy in all the areas of my life. In being a mom and having a family, in being a student and going to school and being a worker and having a job. In all these areas of my life I am who I am and I apply my personal thinking and my personal beliefs.
    3. Yes, they have evolved and I believe they will continue to change and I am glad because sometimes things do not work out the way we suppose to and we have to move on and continue forward. It would be nice to be like those people that always wanted to be a doctor and they grow up and go to medical school and become one. In my case I have changed careers in my life with and without formal education and I am happy and satisfied with what I am today. When I finished this degree I will definitely have a different career goal, and I am very excited in found out what will turn out to be.

    2. Is your personal philosophy interdisciplinary? How so?
I don't really think my personal philosophy is really interdiciplinary. It fits everything in my life.

    3. Have your career goals evolved? In what way?
I think my career goals haven't really evolved. I think once I get into my field I will have a better understanding of everything and go from there.

  15. @ Veronica, It is good that you are honest with your self, because I met people that have not been honest with themselves and the wind up is they got no where. So always be honest with yourself!

  16. 1. Personal philosophy is a way of life. Professional life is generally a key part of your overall life and should be treated and respected by your personal philosophy. One aspect of my personal philosophy includes consistently analyzing situations (either in my past or of the people who surround me) and bettering/preparing myself for the next similar situation. I believe living life is learning, and I intend to learn everything I’ve ever wanted to know.
    2. My personal philosophy is interdisciplinary. As I stated above, I see myself as a life learner. I compile everything I learn from various disciplines (formal and informal) to create and develop my own personal philosophy on viewing the world and living life.
    3. My career goals have dramatically evolved in the past year because of the increased development in my personal philosophy. Setting any sort of future goal or career goal was a strenuous task that I could not conceive until I began to develop my personal philosophy on life. To develop my personal philosophy I started to take action. I accomplished tasks I have always wanted to. For example I skydived, backpacked through eight countries in Europe, moved out of my home town, and am currently attending a university. Now I know what I want out of life and what I want to do with my life.

I am the same way about learning from the past, especially mistakes. It took a while for me not to be upset with past incidences until I realized that it is a learning experience and I can only improve from here!

I as well, like what you said about being honest with yourself, this is so important. By being honest with ourselves, we can be real about where we are and where we want to go, and how to accomplish that. With out being honest with ourselves, there is the potential to misguide ourselves done a wrong path.

  19. @Samantha,
Actually being in your career will bring you to a real consensus of what you are looking to get out of your field. I have tried a few jobs myself, and it was not until I experienced them did I realize that they were not for me. There is nothing like life experiences! I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

  20. 1. How does your personal philosophy play into your professional life?

It plays in on a daily basis, all day long. I work with people all day long and I try to treat them all with respect.

    2. Is your personal philosophy interdisciplinary? How so?

I don't really know if it's interdisciplinary or not. If treating people respectfully is interdisciplinary, then yes it is.

    2. Have your career goals evolved? In what way?

Career goals should ALWAYS be evolving. I don't think that you should ever "settle". Always keep your options open and always look to better your situation. If you don't, you wil become stagnant and not be as happy as you possibly could be.

  21. @ MercedesBeaudoin

I like the way you described your philosophy. I feel like a personal philosophy should be evolving over time just like your career goals should be.

  22. @Nikim. I like your philosophy. It is completely true. We might have done mistakes in the past, but we need to learn from them and keep going forward with to make life stronger and become wiser.

@Veronica Alonso. We all have different roles in life and in all of them our philosophy needs to be applied to make things work the best way possible.

  23. @Wayne .. I agree we should never ever settle, and by not settling we leave room for more happiness like you mentioned , plus so much more:). My roomate is like kind of person that has always been against tattoos on her own body, until the other day randomly she said, I want to get step by step on the inside of my foot. I questioned why besides foot and foot and of course the obvious meaning of relating to life, but then she began to talk about the journey it entails the emotion it brings the steps it will lead to, and had her heart set on this and it made me relate to my life in just in fact a simple phrase is so much more than just words.

  24. @jennrimo - your comment to whether or not you were going to like the job was not determined until you experienced it, and I am a strong believer of that now, espically once I experienced it myself. I always try to look back at things never as a regret but to learn from it, and I really wish I would have experienced other jobs before or during my college journey rather than after and trying to experiment in job environments before I further my career.

  25. 1. My personal professional philosophy is happiness over money. I don't need to be rich, my bills simply have to be paid, but I must be happy with my job. I need a sense of satisfaction and purpose in my employment.

    2. Yes, it is interdisciplinary. It deals with money, budgeting, and emotions.

    3. Yes, they have evolved. I used to want a job where I could still have time to go out and have fun with friends. Basically, my personal life was more important than my professional life. Now I am more interested in my professional life. It is more important to hold a job than to hold a social status.

@Wayne: You make a good point. If you don't make new goals then what do you do after you've reached a goal?

@UCFSENIORGIRL: I think you are wrong about your philosophy not being interdisciplinary. You want to be happy with your life, your life has more then one aspect of it. Therefore, your goal to be happy must fit more than one area.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Veroncia, I agree with you I think you should always be honest with yourself. You are the only one who knows what will make you happy. It isn't always easy but honesty is the best policy.

  27. 1. Personal philosphy plays a big role in my professional life. My personal philosophy is that i need to work hard at everything i do in order to succeed. If i follow this in my professional life, i will go far.

    2. My personal philosophy is interdisiplinary. It is because it relates to everything i do and not just one thing. Everything i do needs to be done at its best. Also because another personal philosphy is to try to be happy with everything.

    3. My career goals have evolved somewhat. I know i want to be successful in business and politics but not sure exactly how. i think i will figure them out with time and more experience.
