Alrighty, lets get down to it:
- How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
(For those of you that haven't had a job as of yet, how do you hope to use interdisciplinarity in your career?) - What has been your professional history?
- What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
(For example my weakest skill is my assertivness... which is mildly nonexistent!) - What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
(I can try to participate more in meetings and get my voice heard, as well as not cower when a patron yells at me!) - Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
- How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
(If you havent participated, you can chose to give a hypothetical explanation or tell us why you would like to participate in one) - Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
(This connects to last week, dont re-paste! concentrate on your career) - How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
(don't be afraid if it isnt connected....you may not think it is but someone may provide you with an epiphany!) - How have your career goals altered?
(Have anyone of you changed your career goals since you started this degree? (may not have been the cause))

1. How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
ReplyDeleteI use it every day and have for the last 19 years indealing with customers, sales reps, and manufacturers.
2. What has been your professional history?
I have been in the golf retail industry for 19 years, 15 of which have been in a managerial position.
3.What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
Strongest.....good comunicater and delegator
Weakest....not the most organized of people.
4. What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
Watch and learn from other people that are more organized than I am.

6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
At my age, I don't know that an internship would help me a whole lot.
7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
It comes down to how you treat people. The old saying "you catch more flie with honey than with vinegar" is very true. You can get people to do things the way that you want them done by treating them with respect and earning their trust.
8. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
I think that it is very interdisciplinary because you are looking at every situation from the perspective of every person involved.
9. How have your career goals altered?
The only thing that has changed for me is the side of the counter that I want to be on. I want to be the sales rep that calls on the account.
****
I just want to let everyone know that I have thouroughly enjoyed this part of this class. Thank you to all of the GTA's. Even though I am an old crumudgen (sp), I have learned a lot from al of you and love the energy and enthusiasm that you have for school anfd for your future. I hope that, in turn, I have been able to offer a little bit of insight and/or advice to at least one of you. Good luck in the remainder of your studies and in your life after college!
CHEERS!
Wayne Bannatyne
PS sorry about the typos
ReplyDeleteWayne, I hope the rest of your college studies goes smoothly!! Take the energy from this class and instill it in all your others! =)
ReplyDelete1. I have you used interdisciplinarity in my professional life through having different types of jobs and jobs which have called for me to have mathematical, grammatical and intrapersonal skills.
ReplyDelete2. My professional life has consisted of a job at an ice rink where I did everything from work the front desk, handle the snackbar, score hockey games, and even drive the zamboni. I, also, have had a job in the human services field where I transported foster children to and from placements and supervised their visitations with their family members. My most recent full-time job was a Parts Advisor at a BMW motorcycle shop where I handled inventory control, reports, shipping and receiving, and purchasing.
3. Strongest would be versatility. I will do whatever is asked of me, within moral reason.
Weakest would be punctuality. I am the type of person who will be late to their own funeral.
4. I can set my clock ahead, get up a half hour earlier, or even try to get my mindset that I have to be at work earlier than I actually do.
5. I don't really know of any clubs or organizations that can assist me with my career.
6. An intership would give me some real life experience in my chosen field and help to give me an upperhand when seeking future employment.
7. My professional philosophy will be met with a career in the television industry. I may wind-up with a position that doesn't pay much, but I will be happy to be working in an area I am interested in.
8. My philosophy is interdisciplinary because it deals with two aspects: money and happiness.
9. A few years ago I wanted nothing more than to be a motorcycle mechanic. I even spent the fortune (which I will be paying for the rest of my life) to go to WyoTech. After I was laid-off from my job at BMW, I took time to reflect on my life and figure out where I want to take it. I realized that I had always had a passion for television productions and decided to start on my path towards that field.
@Wayne: I am hoping that one day I am able to say I have been at my job for 19 years. That is a great success! Good luck on getting the sales rep position.
1. How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
ReplyDeleteI use it to deal with all the different types of problems that can arise.
2. What has been your professional history?

Just practice.
5. Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
SMPS (Society for Marketing Professional Services) and Professional Club Marketing Association
6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
My internships have helped me by directing me to the area of Marketing that I would most like to go in. I think it's also given me a lot of hands of experience.
7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
My philosophy is that if I'm happy in my career I'll be able to be the best marketing person I can be.
8. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
I mean I think it applies to everything. I just want to be happy in my future, so I think it's kind of general and not interdisciplinary.
9. How have your career goals altered?
My career goals haven't changed any because of this class. From my internship this semester I have a more clear idea of what I'd like to do after graduation.
1. How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
ReplyDeleteMy interdisciplinarity will be extremely beneficial in my professional life. I intend my interdisciplinartiy to obtain my dream career because it has allowed me to become more well-rounded with knowledge and experience. Once attaining the occupations I will use these skills on a daily basis to give the best performance possible.

Unfortunately the only work experience I currently have is being a server since I was 14 years old. However, my perseverance to succeed and my future hopes of an internship will broaden and excel my professional history.
3. What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
My strongest job skills are my determination to be the best and my outstanding social skills. A weakness of mine is my second-guessing nature.
4. What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
I am working on this issue on a daily basis and have already seen great improvement. Instead of asking for second opinions on every matter I determine what the best possible outcome is for not only myself but for those around me.
5. Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
Online News Association, National Writers Union, American Society of Journalists and Authors, and International Federation of Journalists.
6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
My hope is to obtain a summer internship to broaden my professional experience that I will develop and use to obtain a career.
7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
My personal philosophy is to learn from experiences of all variety. Bettering my professional life is a goal of mine that I intend to accomplish. Only I have the power to make myself succeed so I must do whatever I can to see that it happens accordingly.
8. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
My philosophy is interdisciplinary because the idea of being interdisciplinary draws from various studies and combining them to solve issues. I will accomplish my goals (my issue I want to solve) through these experiences from an assortment of studies in life.
9. How have your career goals altered?
When I first started this degree I had a minor in marketing because I was not sure what path I wanted to follow. Now I know I want to pursue a career as a magazine journalist and eventually move up to an editor position.
(I tried to paste a picture here of a "Best Magazine Journalist" pin here but it won't let me :()
p.s. The blog part of this course was tremendous and I was very appreciative of all the feedback! Thank you! I wish the best to everyone!
thanks for trying mercedes
ReplyDelete1. You use it everyday of your life believe it or not. You use when talking to people and you use it as you are even by yourself. I will use it in my professional career, to guide me to when I need to use it.
ReplyDelete2. I have been in hospitality for the last 4 years and 3 years in customer service.
3. My strongest skills are my talking skills, I am a great sales men. I would have to say my greatest weakness is some times my talking as well. Some times I need to learn to keep quite.
4. What I need to do is think before I speak, I was told that many times before, to construct a sentence that has meaning to it, and not just say what is on my mind.
5. Disney volunteers would be a helpful organization for me to meet people that are in the same industry. Also the hospitality group of America, it is a group of people around the untied states that are in the hospitality industry.
6. I did the Disney internship and I felt it changed my life, it has made me open minded and more aware of other cultures. That will be surly great qualities for my profession.
7. I feel that your professional life should be similar to your personal life. You want to be happy in what you are doing. You must be passionate about what you are doing, and this will help how you handle your professional career. Just enjoy your life even if you are working.
8. This philosophy is because it makes you think that you should do what ever makes you happy. If its only doing one thing, or doing multiple things. It makes you think of how using interdisciplinary philosophy can help you in life.
9. Yes my career goals are changing everyday as we speak, I am using all the advantages in my life to make sure I am doing something that I feel is accomplished. I alter them so I get a more detailed answer in what I want my career to be, instead of having a broad explanation. People just need to find what is the perfect fit for them.
@ mercedes, It is ok that you were only a server. Use what you like in serving to help you figure out what would be the best fit for you. Being a server is not as easy as it looks, i couldn't do it!
ReplyDelete@ucfseniorgirl, I think once you get a chance to work in the job field, you find out that it is nothing like school. Use that to your advantage, put what you learned in school to influence your coworkers, by sharing thoughts of what you learned. Then you will realize what will be the best job for you!
ReplyDelete1. My areas are Commerce and Computational Sciences, minor in Health Care Service Administration. I think of getting a job at doctor's office while I'm still in school. I want to get some experience to continue in a hospital after my graduation. Another opportunity is that my wife is in the master's program for Mental Health Counseling and when she opens her office, I can run financial and administrative part for her.
ReplyDelete2. My education was always important for me. Since the first grade I had all the highest grades. I was concerned about my performance at every aspect of my academia life. I was the president of the class and a member of school’s student government, participated in competitions: sports and academia. I won third place in the Math Completion in my town, also was honorably mentioned in Public Speech Competition. I have several awards and Congratulation and Thank You Letters from school’s professors and student governments. My goal was to graduate with honor that I had achieved.
Entering my University was not problematic for me. I passed all the exams with excellence. For 6 semesters I have studied in Russia, I received all A’s, for the exception of one C (for the reason of professor’s corruption). While studying, I started to work at the Regional Court. I was chosen by one of my professor to join him at his work place, based on my excellent performance in his class. He left for another city in a month after I started, and I was promoted to be the Chief of Computer Department of the Regional Court. I had three co-workers, who came to work there before me, but I was chosen for the Supervising position. My duties included administrating the network in two Court buildings, helping about 60 staff members with technical issues of computer technology, educating Court’s staff on new updates, administrating the Court’s web-site, updating and ordering the equipment (hard- and software), managing employees in my department, budget the money that were disbursed to our department to acquire new equipment, and many others. This job required to have great abilities to be a computer specialist, a system administrator, a manager, a businessman with communication skills and approaches to different people: judges, staff members, prosecutors, computer firms, police officers, and others. Time management and disbursement of duties played crucial role in my work.
After I moved to the U.S., 95 % of the time I lived in my new home country, I had a job as a server. This helps me to develop my communicational, problem solving, conflict management, and customer service skills. I have also worked as a manager’s assistant at the convenient store for about a year and a half, being promoted only after half a year after start as a cashier. I was promoted above the employees that had worked there for several years. I think it was due my fast learning and my devotion to what I was doing. I still have these all qualities today, if not even better, because now I have greater opportunities and chances for growth in my personal and professional lives. I will pursue my childhood dreams with all the passion and my mental abilities to succeed and become a useful member of my community and U.S. Health Care Systems.
3. Strongest are fast-learning and perfection in everything I do. My weakest point is teamwork. I prefer to do everything myself, that work in the groups.
ReplyDelete4. I guess I need to start trust people more, and distribute job among group members.
5 Florida Medical Facilities
http://www.minoritynurse.com/about/hospitals_fl.html and Carrer Builder.com
6.I really do not want to participate in internship. I made arrangements with my friend, who works as a supervisor in medical facility, so I want to start working the field before I graduate, I think it will help me more to understand my career and move faster along the ladder.
7. Ok, if we can’t just repeat ourselves, another my philosophy is do the best as you can to perform at anything to do. Learning and updating the knowledge that we have help to support this idea the best.
8. Again it is not interdisciplinary philosophy, because it fits every aspect of our lives.
9. No, my career goals did not change, but become stronger and more reliable after this course.
I tried to post a photo, but do not how to do it in this blog
ReplyDelete@ Mercedes: I agree with you that learning from everything we experience it is the best attitude in this life. Without learning we would have been primitive creatures, and never would have reached the moon.
ReplyDelete@Sammy: Being a server is a really stressful job I work as one at two places, sometimes I just want to stay away from people as far as I can, but it cannot happen, so I had to learn how to deal with it.
ReplyDelete1.So far I have worked in the health field, but my previous informal education contributed to a set of interdisciplinary concepts that have helped reinforce my skills in that particular field.
ReplyDelete2.I am a Pharmacy technician. I received my certification while I was in the U.S. Navy. I have an extensive experience working in busy hospitals.
3. My strongest skills are that I am very detail oriented, work well under pressure, organized, manage my time very well and I am very eager to learn.
Weakest skills: I tend to overcomitt myself when a project deadline is rapidly approaching
4. To improve upon my weak skill by allowing other team members to take on greater responsibilities in project roles for a more balanced work field.
5.American Pharmacist Association, American Society for Microbiology
6.I haven't participated in any intership or externship programs yet. I think it is a great opportunity to get the hands on experience in any given field and obtain advice and knowledge from the experts in that particular area.
7. My personal philosophy is to do everything right and put the best effort in every aspect of my life especially in my career because it brings personal gratification when the things are done right and the results are very positive.
8.when you try to do the things right and you are putting all your energy into your job that means that you are applying different ideas, and disciplines to get the job done or solve a problem therefore, it is interdisciplinary.
9.Since I decided to pursue IDS. I haven't changed my career; however, I have been thinking about narrowing down my disciplines for further education.
How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
ReplyDeleteI haven't had the chance to yet. Never have held a job where I needed to know math and politics symulaniously... What I hope to use it for though is to be a boss and take my company to the top.
What has been your professional history?
So far, I have been a sales associate for FYE and a construction worker for a roofing company.
What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
My Strength is that I get things done without complaining. My Weakness is that I am not all that competative while I work. This will not help me advance.
What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
I could say that I can try to be more aggressive, but in reality, I will not change. It is my nature, and I have no intention of changing that.
Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
Math club and debate club would be useful for me.
How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
I haven't participated in any, but I would assume that they would give me valuable job experience that I would then translate into the real world.
Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
My personal philosophy is to get the job done. That is it.
How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
In getting the job done, I may have to use other disciplines. That's all there is to it.
How have your career goals altered?
They have not. Eventually I will get a job, and then I will see where it goes from there.
Sorry, But I am not good with computers. The photo that I do wish for you to see is a businessman standing next to a giant Question Mark (?) Here is the URL if you are interested:

In the U.S, I have worked in Universal studios for 2 years and in Macy’s for 9 years.
What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
My strongest is being bilingual and my weakness being too perfectionist
What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
My problem is that I always do everything myself because I like how I do it so I have to start trusting more in others and be happy when they do their job the way they do it.
Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
Vocational Honor Society
How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
I don’t know if I will be doing an internship.
Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
My philosophy is being honest with myself and others and I apply that to my personal and professional life
How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary
It is because I can be honest in my choices of my carrer and in what I say and what I do so it is applied in all the areas of my studies.
How have your career goals altered?
Yes, first I thought I wanted to do a minor in Education but I changed my areas of study to public affairs.
thanks everyone for trying to post a pic. if anything just paste the link... i like pictures and just want to make it fun!
ReplyDelete1. I have used interdisciplinatiry in my professional life by incorporating various skills and information I have learned from other departments in my daily routine. For example, I went and trained in other departments to learn more about the products the credit union offered. I used the information and tactics used by the other departments to cross sell products and services to our members. I also take notes when working with our real estate attorney and title companies. The information they provide helps me assist my members with real estate advice and recommendations.
ReplyDelete2. I have worked at several jobs different jobs my first being in high school. My first job was at Kmart as a cashier. Then I was a hostess and dining room manager at Shoney’s. After that I moved Florida and worked as a pharmacy technician for two years. Since that time I have worked at three credit unions. I worked as a teller, head teller, member service representative, receptionist, and now I am a mortgage processor.
3. My strongest jobs skills are that I am good with members/customers, I pay attention to detail, I am a team player, and I am willing to whatever is asked of me. My weakest job skills are that I have an issue arriving to work on time and I need change, I hate repetitive work.
4. In order to improve upon my weak skills I could get up earlier or adjust my schedule. I could make my job more interesting by taking more classes/training sessions and take on more responsibility or additional job duties at work.
5. Two organizations that are useful to my current career would be Mortgage Bankers Association of Florida and Credit Union National Association. Both of these organizations would provide me with the information necessary to stay on top of new regulations and guidelines that I need to know in order to stay in compliance while doing my job.
6. I have not participated in any internships or externships however I think they would be very helpful. I would like to participate in one in the future because I think it would provide you with hands on experience that you cannot get in a classroom. Having this experience will allow me to make an educated decision as to if I want to pursue a particular career.
7. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life is “it is not a mistake if you have learned a lesson from it”. In my current career regulations change every day. Sometimes it can become overwhelming and hard to keep up with them. In some circumstances if I make a mistake it can cost the credit union hundred of dollars in fines. I try not to get down on myself when this happens. I just sit and reflect on the situation and think about ways I could have avoided this situation and how to avoid it from happening in the future.
8. I think my philosophy is interdisciplinary in the sense that I take information from various sources in order correct my mistakes and to keep them from happening in the future. I take classes, ask for advice from various sources, and try to incorporate what I have learned in order to do a better job.
9. My career goals have changed is starting this course. Originally I majored in Elementary Education. I switched my degree to Interdisciplinary Studies in order to avoid the required internships and graduate quicker. After looking at all of the various career options that are now open to me because of the degree switch I found that teaching may not be in my immediate future. I have thought about working in human resources or possible working or managing a community center.

@nikim thanks for posting a pic!! lol
ReplyDeleteIt was wonderful to hear how everyone is weaving interdisciplinarity into their lives, especially before you are more familiar with the idea of interdisciplinary goals. But the best part i think is how most of you are molding your lives to include interdisciplinary ideals instead of completely changing your mindset.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone has a wonderful finals week. AND a great summer!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck next semester!
Internal and External Internships /community outreach in my eyes are an excellent way to help develop a personal professional development within a career. Hands on experience can be helpful in deciding a career, learning and obtaining knowledge, evaluating, and reflecting in different ways. I personally feel that a couple of internships. Even just exposure to the different environments can help us determine what i/we do and do not like. As we evaluate different career pathways it between helps us determine development to further that. When doing education, the time I spent in a variety of classrooms, and in doing so the experiences were a great learning experience. One I enjoyed doing, and another, I disliked. However, like I said above, reflection we can learn from and in turn dissect what we didn’t like and accommodate that into our own professional life.
ReplyDeleteThrough college I worked mostly as a bartender and occasionally serve. Even though this is no place for a career for me and my professional life I want to obtained, I still learned from it. Guest Service and how we go about situations, our communication skills used to do so, are all soft skills that I developed or if already obtained, enhanced. In the working world we live in today skills such as those are needed to develop careers.
I also wanted to say that I as well hope everyone has an awesome end to their semester. As well, thank you to everyone who shared their insights and helped me build myself, and I as well hope I could help as well. Thanks for an awesome semester everyone:)
ReplyDelete1. I hope to use these skills by being great at a variety of subjects and being able to perform multiple tasks well.
ReplyDelete2. I dont have much of a professional history, but i have had acouple internships and have one this summer in DC working on capital hill.
3. My strongest skill in my work ethic and my weakest is my niceness.
4. I need to be able to be more honest with people even if it hurts there feelings alittle.
5. Working on a Congressional Campaign and Chabad Jewish Student Group.
6. My internship last summer on a congressional campaign got me my internship this summer in DC on capital hill.
7. My personal philosophy is to work as hard as i can and to always be happy.
8. This is interdisiplinary because it connects to everything i do which is a mixture of things.
9. My career goals have not altered much. They have become more realistic though.
@mnoahmiller - I also don't feel like my career goals have altered.
ReplyDelete@J. Lobo305 - getting the job done without complaining really is a great skill!!!
