Week 7 Reflection

Welcome to week 7! We are more than half way through the semester!
This week we will be discussing 'Reflection', and the role that it plays in our
Interdisciplinary experience.

Reflection is important in the process of understanding self. Reflection involves reasoning, evaluating, and these are especially applicable when we are faced with conflicting problems and perspectives. When problem solving in our professional and personal lives, to reflect is important in order to have confidence in our decisions and in our self-concept. Interdisciplinary involves being able to see the bigger picture, and learning from our experience.

For your post, answer the following:

1. What does reflection mean to you? How is description different?
2. How does reflection play into your Interdisciplinary?
3. Share how you will incorporate reflection when developing your e-portfolio.

Feel free to leave your peers feedback that is positive and constructive!
We can all learn from each other!

  1. 1. What does reflection mean to you? How is description different?

To me, reflection is a time to look back and evaluate yourself. In your evaluation, you should be looking to see what were the good things and the bad things that you have done as well as looking to learn how to improve yourself for the future. There really is no actual difference between my description and what was provided above; just one is contemplative (mine) and the other involves trying to assess the world around you which is also mostly contemplative.

    2. How does reflection play into your Interdisciplinary?

It fits in that I would reflect on the best courses of action to go about taking care of the problems that are put to me and then I would reflect on the results of what I did.

    3. Share how you will incorporate reflection when developing your e-portfolio.

My e-portfolio is a compilation of my past experiences as well as a record of my achievements and a "story of me." The entire thing, minus the interview parts, are reflections on both myself and actions that I have taken. The best course of action is to simply tell the truth and be as honest with myself and my readers as possible.

  2. @jennrino. I agree with your explination of #1. As we do evaluate ourselves and by reflecting on the past present and using that for what our future holds we do reflect and learn. I love when people say to use the past as a learning experience rather than a negative thought because to me that's so true. We reflect and take from it in so many different ways. :)

  3. I think that the only truly negative experience, is the experiences where nothing is learned. Time is never wasted when knowledge is gained! Experience is to make us wiser for the future. The past helps us get to our destination!

  4. 1. To me reflection is extremely important. It is the time in your life when you look back at something you have done and decide if it was the right thing to do, if you would have done it different, and how you can do it better next time. If you never reflect, you can never make something better in the future. My description is pretty similar to the one provided.

2.Reflection plays into interdisciplinary by showing me what i have done or learned and putting it into future actions. I can look at what i have learned or how i have learned something and decide if i want to continue learning that way or change something about it.

    3. My e-portfolio is based on what i have done and my future goals. I can use reflection in that in many ways. First off, i look and say what i have done in the past and then say what i will do in the future. What i will do in the future is very much based on what i did in the past and how i learned from it.

  5. 1. What does reflection mean to you? How is description different?
Reflection in one's life is definitely extremely important. I think it's how was learn from our mistakes and learn from the others around us. It also is how we make big decisions in our life. I don't think there's much of a difference in mine and the description above.

    2. How does reflection play into your Interdisciplinary?
I think just this week we have done a lot of reflection in this class for our e-portfolio about me assignments. I had to reflect back on why I am where I am and why I'm doing what I'm doing. I think reflecting really plays apart in interdisciplinary studies because have to state why we choose two different areas to focus on.

    3. Share how you will incorporate reflection when developing your e-portfolio.
Like I mentioned above I really had to reflect back on things and why I choose interdisciplinary studies and my areas of study to do the about me assignments that are due tomorrow.

  6. @mnoahmiller- Definitely agree with you that our past really affects what we do in the future.

@J.Lob305 - I like your description about how interdisciplinary and reflection relate!!

  7. 1.Reflection to me represents an act that an individual does for themselves. Reflecting on yourself and your actions only makes you a stronger and overall better you! By reflecting one can learn by their own experiences and improve upon them. Description is different. Description is explanation in words/writing. Description does not help improve one’s future by looking at their past like reflection does.
    2. Reflection plays into my interdisciplinary because I can consistently use reflection to gain knowledge from my various areas of study and have them coincide with one another. I can use this knowledge when reviewing my reflections and see how my other areas of study could have been used to solve issues or look at them with a new creative eye.
    3. When developing my e-portfolio I will use reflection to better my overall outcome. I believe my e-portfolio will contain not only what is required but will exceed expectations thanks to reflections benefits for improving performances on all matters.

I'm very impressed you said reflection can not only be used by learning from our mistakes but also learning from the mistakes of those around us. I never saw it that way, but I am so glad you opened my mind to that concept.

  9. @jennrimo

You are absolutely right! I too believe that if you do not learn something from an experience than it is not worth it. I also believe that people can learn something no matter the experience (even if the lesson learned is not to do that experience again)!

  10. @MercedesBeaudoin...
I like how you put that reflection makes for a all around better you! That is what is most important in all that we do!
Description I think, is more about fact, and reflection is so much deeper. With description it is what it is, versus reflection, in that we look back to how situations have played out and what we can do different in the future to improve.

  11. 1. Pretty much the same thing. It is a possibility to see myself from different, not mine, point of view, which require evaluation and learning about ourselves. Reflection is the opportunity to see where we are in our lives and what we have learned so far.
    2. Reflection helped me to choose IDS, and see how IDS can fulfill my academic and life’s goals. It helped me to evaluate my abilities, interests of study, my capability to pursue my dreams. Reflection helps me to understand which knowledge should I integrate into my future profession, and which classes I should choose for my major. All problems, that we study, require research. To avoid bias in the research, reflection helps to understand how we should be objective in our tasks.
    3. Certainly, reflection plays on of the mot major roles in building our e-portfolio. Most things we know about ourselves we know from others, and that is reflection. We also used our critical thinking to evaluate ourselves, that is reflection too.

  12. @ J. Lobo 305: I agree that being honest is huge advantage in our lives. I think being open to criticism is a difficult, but right thing to do.

  13. @Mercedes:Definetely we become stronger with each event in ou life, BUT only if we capable to reflect our actions ourselves and accept our reflection in other people's eyes.

  14. 1. My definition of reflection is to analyze a subject or specific situation from a subjective level in order to find the most logical solution to any given issue. In contrast, description is an objective manner in which it either illustrates or narrates a particular event or issue.

    2. Reflection contributes extensively to my interdisciplinary studies since it can provide a subjective analysis of any given issue. As an interdisciplinary student I need to have the ability to see the different sides and approaches to any and all possible subject matter.

    3. I need to transmit a message to my audience that will impact them in such a way that will cause them to have a lasting positive memory of me. In order to achieve this I will need to incorporate reflection in order to analyze the components of my e-portfolio and be able to present it in a simple, understandable, and organized manner. Reflection will be a key factor in the complete development of my e-portfolio.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1.Reflection for me is to analyze a situation or an idea. I can reflect in something that happened in the past and I could learn from my own experiences.
Description for me is as the word says: describe something with words.

    2. Reflection is important as a Interdisciplinarian because I would be analyzing an idea or a project from 3 different areas so I will have to reflect in each idea and find a way to make them work together.

3.In my e-portfolio I am reflecting what I am today and the experience in my life so far. The education that I have and my plans for the future will reflect in my work and in my goals.

  16. @Ivonne Morales,
Using the example of being able to convey your experience to others, by applying reflection is a great thought! That is a great way as well to 'reflect' that description and reflection is different. We can just tell a experience, or bring with it what we have taken from the experience, therefore applying reflection!

  17. 1. To me, reflection means to think back to past experiences, places, or times in your life that helped shape you. I feel hat reflecting is very important to make sure that we take the good from our past, and to refrain from repeating mistakes from our future.

    2. Reflection plays a role in Interdisciplinary Studies because the program allows me to decide what is important to me (in some some ways through reflection) and then create the perfect program for me. Through reflecting on where I have been, I can create my own future through IDS.

    3. I will use reflection to create my E Portfolio because I think back to what has shaped me. It is the things that have happened in the past who have formed who I am now, and all of that needs to go into my E Portfolio.

  18. @Ivonne Morales

You have a great definition of reflection! You came at it from a different angle which changed my view on it a bit.

  19. @Veronica Alonso

I like that in number three you are bringing your future into it. Not only are you using reflection now, but you will later reflect on what you are doing now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. The key word in reflection is reflect. It is to be able to look at your self and reflect back on too life. With description you can not reflect, you can only describe. When you reflect it shows on who you think you are as a person. How you show yourself is a description. Its knowing what is foreseeable an d what is not.
    2. It plays a role in the fact that you can reflect on so many different levels, including interdisciplinary. The choice that you make show your reflections as a person, by showing who you are by your disciplinarys. Each person reflects different into who they utilize their interdisciplinarys.
    3. To me your reflection is the most important part because it reflecting back on what you have accomplished and used to take you where you are today. It gives the big picture to people thru your reflection. I will use my reflections as a stepping stone for more reflections to come!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Amanada, I like that your reflections are your experiences very true. They all shape up what your reflection.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @ Veronica, I like that you take your reflections as ideas. It show what you will remember and what you want to remember as you reflect back on it!

  23. @Sammy Barakat
Since we all have a different Interdisciplinary experience, we will all have different aspects to reflect on, creating a situation where we all have so much to offer each other coming from different perspectives! Great point!

    ReplyDelete
  24. @ MercedesBeaudoin: I like what you said in # 2. As interdisciplinarians we have to reflect our ideas with our 3 areas of study and make them work.

@ UCFSENIORGIRL. I agree with you in reflect in our experiences and our mistakes as well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. For me, reflection is to look back at past experiences that have shaped who we are and that guide us in making future decision. A description is just that, a description. It is a way that someone would describe you to someone else.

Reflection plays a huge roll in being interdisciplinary. Being able to reflect on past experiences helps you look at new things from many different angles.

I think that the e-portfolio is built on reflection. We have to take a look at who we are and how we got to be that way, and then try to make the necessary adjustments.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Amanda Barbato. That is absolutely right regarding the fact that reflection is required when selecting the subjects most important to you.

@Jenrimo. From every experience we encounter in life a lesson needs to be learned. It is important to use those lessons as references for future experiences.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Description would be details and facts about a experience, and reflection would result in what we have learned from the experience.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Ivonne Morales, You are absolutely right, a experience is a waste if we do not learn from them and apply it to the future.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i agree with everyone. reflection allows you to grow and build yourself into a better person. but you also have to consider how hard it is sometimes to reflect on your own and take peoples criticisms beyond just insults but instead building blocks.

also note that reflections are fluid and change easily because they are dependent on your experiences...

how would you describe yourself vs how you would present your reflection of yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. Reflection to me is looking back at past events in order to better understand and make decisions about your future. Description is different because you don't use it to make decisions.

    2. Reflection plays into my IDS because I use it to see what areas I've been more involved with and make decisions about where to develop my education.

    3. Reflection will be incorporated into my e-portfolio by looking back on past jobs and activities and listing them in away that will work towards my future goals.

@Adriana: You are right. Reflections by others helps to improve your own reflections and decisions.

@Sammy Barakat: Your explainations of reflection and description are very effective.
