week 1 Introductions

Hi everyone welcome to our Blog! I’m Cydney. I hope that your semester has started nicely. I/We look forward to getting to know everyone, and feel free to ask us any questions or concerns that you have. I’ll start by telling you a little about myself. I am originally from West Virginia and moved to Florida with my family. I am currently in my only class needed left to graduate here at UCF. Yayy! My areas of concentration are Business (minor), education, and humanities. I currently just got a job with Universal Studios with one of my best friends and cannot wait for the adventures to come! Throughout your IDS journey, you will find new ways to go about finding your career, and we are here to help you discover and share thoughts and facts that could help you as well as others.

Most of the time the postings probably will not be this big of an intro, but since it is the first, everyone from our Capstone group is going to introduce themselves as well followed by a few questions for yourself.

Hello! My name is Carmin Leach. I started as a traditional student in 2001 until I became a non-traditional student in 2004 when I started my family. I'm a forever senior... graduating this semester. My two areas are Education and Behavioral & Social Sciences and my minor is in Entrepreneurship. I was an Education major until the reality of having a family and working full time did not allow me to participate in the internships. I really struggled trying to balance all of those responsibilities so currently I am able to focus just on being a mom and a student.

I explain IDS to others by saying that it allows me to learn about three different areas that interest me. I still want to become a teacher and being able to have a psychology background in my studies will only benefit myself and my future students. After teaching for several years, I would love to open up a school of my own. I plan to use that Entrepreneurial spirit at that time.

This major means a lot to me personally because I will finally get my degree! After struggling through these last few years trying to figure out the dynamics of finishing school, I know now I will be able to complete it. A disadvantage of this degree however is that I think a lot of people don't take it seriously. We should be given just as much credit as those who study a "regular" degree if not more because we are becoming well-rounded individuals.

Hello! My name is Jennifer Rimoczi. My areas of concentration are Commerce and Public Affairs with a minor in Women Studies. My ultimate goal has always been to help children and protect their rights. I plan to work for DCF (Department of Children of Families) when I graduate this semester, and by understanding and helping women, I knew that I would be able to better help children as well. As I was taking courses as a junior, it was brought to my attention that I could become a IDS student, and when I understood what this was, I knew it was for me!

In most cases, I have to explain to people exactly what IDS is. I tell them that IDS is a major that has two areas of study versus just one, and you have your minor as well. You choose the areas of study that interest you. It opens more options and possibilities, career wise in the future.

If I could do it all over again, I would be an IDS student again! The benefits for me have been great having been able to study in the different areas that I find interesting. The only downfalls is that it is not so familiar to main stream society. We have to be prepared to explain to others what IDS is. Main stream society expects you to have one area of expertise, and have not fully recognized the importance of becoming well rounded students and individuals. We must be ready to use our minds, and not just our knowledge!

Salutations! My name is Adriana Valencia and I am a graduating senior this semester! My areas of concentration are Commerce and Computation Science with a double minor in French and Marketing. My ultimate goal in life is to become a children’s and reference librarian, this aspiration is the main reason I chose to attain an Interdisciplinary Degree in order to further my education in the area I would like to utilize as a librarian that cannot be attained through the master’s degree. But the hardest reasoning I have found is that most people do not understand what an IDS degree is. How could I explain it to them properly? This is what I say:

"IDS is similar to a liberal studies degree, but I chose which subjects to concentrate in. It’s almost as if I am specializing in specific subjects I find relevant to my future career. Or to put it simpler, I am cross-training in different fields."

Even though that sounds awe inspiring, it does have it down fall. Because its concentrations, I am not getting a complete background in any one subject for a detailed understanding, which makes for a hard defense in saying you fully understand an area. But it will make it easier if you need to learn or work in a different area later. This degree allows you certain versatility in the workforce and in higher education.

So how do you explain your IDS degree to someone else? When applying for schools or jobs in the future, that is something that could come up a lot, and knowing and preparing the correct way to explain it, can help. Focus in on the advantages and positives rather than negatives and disadvantages, use those to try and discover new perspectives of the situation, such as knowing how to turn those negatives around!
Within your post this week tell us about yourself as well as your degree and how you would present it to others. Just a few other topics that could help us get to know each other could be who are you? What year are you? What are your areas of concentration? What do you plan to do with those in the future?

  1. Hello everyone. My name is Wayne Bannatyne. I am 42 (almost 43) years old and the father of 2 young girls (God help me!). I am a 25th year senior and am on schedule to graduate in the fall of this year. I started college in 1986 at FSU and could never decide exactly what I wanted to major in. I had a career opportunity in 1992 and took it, with every intention of going back to get a degree....and HERE I AM!

I was very happy to find the IDS program. I am very interested in a lot of different things and when I read the description of the major....my wife and I both said "That's the one!". My courses of study are Health and Social Sciences with a minor in Business Admin. I am going to be real honest here. The other reason that I chose this major, after being in the business program, is that it would get me a degree about a year faster. I don't really worry about trying to explain my major to anyone. As I have come to realize, most people/companies don't care what your degree is in (with the exception of very specialized areas like engineering or medicine), they just want to know that you HAVE a degree. It tells an employer that you have the ability and the desire to learn. I am in, and have been in, the golf industry for 18 1/2 years and I hope to stay in it as a sales rep. I have never been asked what my degree was in, just whether or not I had a degree. The fact that I do not have it yet, has denied me the opportunity to interview for positions that I know I could perform at.

My point for saying all of this is not to downplay IDS....on the contrary, it is to let everyone know that a degree is a degree. Be proud and know that IDS is just as meaningful as any other degree out there. When you walk across that stage...you will be a college graduate just like the rest of the people that walk with you. It's like the old joke. "what do you call the person that graduates last in their medical school class?"

    "Doctor!"

    Cheers!

    Wayne Bannatyne

  2. Hi my name is Veronica Alonso and I am 40 years old. I am originally from Mexico City. I have been living in Orlando for 10 years. I am married and have 2 beautiful girls, Nicole 7 and Sofia 2. I studied Photography in Mexico and I love it but I always wanted to have a Bachelor's Degree. It took me forever to graduate from Valencia because I have been always a part-time student and I had to take EASL and Preparatory Math classes. Anyway, I graduated from Valencia last summer so I am Junior at UCF, this is my second semester and I am very excited.

When I enrolled in UCF I was very confused in what to study so when I found out about the IDS major it just fit perfect to me. I am concentrating in Psychology and Public Affairs and a minor in Marketing. I have been working part-time in Macy,s for 8 years in cosmetics and I love it. I think when I graduate, my little one will be going to Kindergarden and it will be perfect for me to start applying for a better position within the company or with a cosmetic line.... that is my plan A. Plan B is to be a paralegal and office manager and expand my husband legal practice. He is an Attorney and he works for himself, he really needs some help and it will be great to have a legal office......and of course travel around the world with my camera and sell my pictures someday in an Art festival LOL.

I agree with Wayne, a degree is a degree, and I just want to have one and learn the subjects that I am interested in. This blog thing is fun!

  3. Hi, everyone!!! My name is Anatoly Gaas. It is my second semestr in UCF. I finished 8 semesters in Russia and 2 semesters in Valencia Community College. It feels like I have been a student forever. I studied Applied Computer Science in Economics in Russia, so I chose IDS major to be able to transfer more credits to UCF. But now. after discovering IDS deeper to myself I think I chose right major. My minor is Health Systems Administration, and my areas are Commerce and Computational Sciences. I think it is really good combination!
My plans for the future are to work in the Hospital or doctor's office. Another opportunity is working with my wife, running family business(she is in the counseling program and graduating the same time I will).
I have been happily married for 5 years already. We do not have any kids yet, but we share our home with 3 pets: chinchilla, amazon parrot and cat. we are thinking about a dog too. :) I love travelling, skywatching, and playing sports.
It is nice to meet everyone! Good luck!

  4. Hello!!!

My name is Mercedes Beaudoin and this is my first semester at UCF and my first semester of online classes ( so I am intimidated). I finished my AA at Brevard Community College this past December. My main areas of study for IDS is Behavioral and Social Sciences and Communications with a minor in Marketing. There are so many different careers I am interested in and that is why I chose IDS so I can be balanced in the knowledge I want to obtain and express that in any career field I choose. My dream job would be to work for a magazine (preferably fashion). I am currently working as a server at The CheeseCake Factory. I enjoy to dance ballet, watch movies, and travel.

I just got engaged last month while traveling in Europe. It was very romantic and I am a very lucky girl. We live in a town house together now in Winter Park and hopefully will have a kitten together soon!

I am excited and nervous to see how this blog goes! Good luck everyone!

  5. Hello, my name is Sammy Barakat. I am a 22 year old junior getting a degree in whatever I want. The reason I said in whatever I want is that I am getting a degree in IDS. This degree allows me the freedom and mobility to choose three area of studies I like. When first coming into UCF, I was very confused. I didn't know what subject I wanted to take. I knew I had a interest in business but i just wasn't happy to just have that as a major in college. Then I went to go speak to a counselor and told them my dilemma, from that I was introduced into IDS. I never knew that a degree like this existed, I thought college was you only choose one major and one minor. When I found out that I could have this degree I was immediately happy. I said in my head now I will have a degree were I will have more job opportunities.

Currently my IDS degree consists of commerce and humanities as my major and I/o Communications as my minor. I feel with these 3 areas it will help me advance in life. When I will present my degree to others, I will feel if my degree is unique to other people. I would explain my degree as a jack of all trades. I will have experience in multiple areas as appose to someone with just knowing one thing. My goal is to be a CEO of a major company and with being a CEO you must have a variety of qualities to be able to be a CEO. I feel with the degree I am choosing, I will have a competitive advantage over other who just choose one major.

I personally want to have a fulfilling life. With the degree I am aiming to get and the career I am wanting to pursue, I feel like I am on the right track. Everyone has there own plan to go ahead and make there dreams come true. I have those same plans but yet I want to be not like everyone else. I want to be an individual to say these were the paths I had in life and these were the choices I took. I feel I am making more than just progress in my life. I feel like I am exploring what life means for me. And for right now it is to be happy with my decisions and go on to be something great!

  7. @ Adriana Valencia: I have the same areas as you, I think it is an awesome combination. I like French language as well, I have studied it myself, so Je parle Francais un petit peu. I droped my learning, and really regret about it. One day(probably, after graduation, I hope), I will start it again. My wife's dream is to go to France and she can speak good French, so I want to keep up when I am there with her.

  8. @ Veronica Alonso:Photography is a really nice hobby, especially if you love nature. I think it is just a tough industry to get in too. If you believe in yourself and pursue your dream really hard, it is a nice money-making and for the most part interesting job.

  12. Week 1 - Nicole Massie

My name is Nicole Massie. I am originally from Virginia but moved down to Florida in 1998 with my family. As soon as I graduate I am getting out of here. I am ready to travel and figure out where I am meant to be. Speaking of graduating, I should hopefully graduate by the end of the year as long as I can keep up with my studies. I have been attending school part-time since 2003, and I am just ready to be done. At least for awhile at least.

I was an elementary education major until last semester. I realized that I was not going to be able to complete the internships while working full-time and there was no way I was going to lose my job or even try to find another job in this economy, lol. My areas of study are interpersonal/organizational communications and sociology with a minor in education. I am hoping this degree I will be able to start a career in human resources or with a community center.

When trying to explain my degree to someone I just tell them that is a degree program that allows you to tailor your areas of study and classes to fit your needs. An IDS degree allows you to select classes that interest you and fit your educational path. It is one of the best degrees out there and really needs to be more publicized. I think more students would select this as their major if they knew about it. Unfortunately, that usually doesn't happen until they are close to graduating.

  17. Hello to everyone, my name is Ivonne Morales. I am pursuing my BS in IDS. My main areas are Life/Biomedical Sciences and Physical Sciences, and my minor is Marketing.
I was previously in the Molecular Biology and Microbiology program; therefore, I was able to complete all my main areas while under that major. Now I can just focus on my minor and hopefully I will be able to graduate this coming summer. The main reason why I changed my major is because I want to work with my dad in his business, and help the business grow. We have seen that there are some aspects of the business that need immediate attention, and he needs someone to be in charge of those areas which are the sales and marketing. I think this is a big opportunity for me to become self-employed and apply all the concepts from my minor to the company. Another reason is that I will be 30 in October and I would like to obtain a Bachelors degree. When I told my family about this program, they understood the whole concept and how it worked. They were pleased that I was going to be able to graduate sooner, but they did not know what kind of occupation I could obtain with this particular major. I explained to them that I am obtaining the necessary tools to implement in our company, or I could use this to pursue a position as a pharmaceutical representative which is a very appealing industry for me. I think that there are more possibilities for me to land a good job in this field, and I will continue my education no matter what path I choose. I need to establish myself in a secure position since I not only have myself to take care of but also I have a precious little 3 year old boy that needs me. I am very lucky to have a supportive family, and I want to put all my efforts to see this company grow. I believe that this is a very good decision, once I graduate I will be able to put 100% of my time towards this cause.

  18. This is a very interesting way to get to know my classmates. I have been taking classes with so many people that you see someone new everytime, but this semester is going to be interesting because it is nice to learn about people and their different points of views. I find all the introductions very unique and the fact that we are all pursuing a major that fits exactly to each of our own needs.

I hope you all have a great semester, and look forward to contributing my thoughts and opinions and to learn from your perspecti

  19. @Veronica Alonso. I admire you because there has been sometimes that I find it very difficult to manage my life with my classes, son and my families business. It is very encouraging to see that other people are persistent and they are in similar or more difficult situations and still manage to achieve their goals. I also find it interesting that you do photography as well.

  20. Hello! I am Amanda Barbato, and I live in Gainesville Florida. My Areas are Letters and Modern Language, and Social Sciences. My minor is in Business.

When friends or family members ask me about the Interdisciplinary Studies program, I have to explain to them that I am able to learn multiple areas of study, and incorporate them together! Once people understand what it means to be an IDS student, they think it is pretty neat.

  21. Hello everyone, it seems as though I have a late start here on the introduction, but I will go ahead and get it rolling. My name is Michael Rands and when I first started here at UCF I was interested in pursuing something in the golf industry, and was involved in a Hospitality Management degree. I did two semesters at the Rosen Campus and realized that that is not the direct industry I wanted to go into when I was done. I had a counselor mention to me the IDS degree and what it entitled as far as a program and was immediately interested in the Communication and Commerce with a History minor.

I've had multiple family and friends ask about what line of study I am currently pursuing and I tell them about the degree Im currently studying lets me pursue different areas and concentrations. I tell them Im able to pick and choose what exactly interest me. Its not just a general or a specific degree but many ideas and studies to form one.

  22. Hey there everyone, my name is Jace. Sorry I'm a little late with this; I am not the most tech-savy person in the world and had no idea what was going on.. So my bad.
Either way; I am using this major to do my studies of applied mathmatics and political science. Believe me, I know it is a strange combination, and the reason behind the choice is that I am not actually interested in anything else. Personally, I have no idea what I want to do after school, I am just trying to get through it with some type of degree.
Me in a nutshell; I am hyperactive, tend to not be able to make up my mind or stay on any particular subject for very long, and like to do things spontaniously. I am also very sociable and fun to be around on any given day of the week, and I always try to make time for being with friends and family. The problem is that all those traits tend to get me in trouble, but hey, I Cope.
I look forward to continue to blog with all of you now that I know what a blog is. So I will talk to you all later

  25. Hi everyone! Sorry I'm a little late but I'm just now figuring out this blogging! My name is Samantha Dullard and my areas of focus are Commerce and Education with Minors in Business, Marketing, and Leadership. I am walking in the May graduation ceremonies but I will be officially graduating in August after Capstone! I am currently looking for jobs in Marketing. This semester I am interning with the marketing director at Waterford Lakes ('Like' us on Facebook!!!) and I have really enjoyed it so far and would love to a job in that type of marketing.

I orginally started at UCF I was a Marketing major but during my junior year I was having a feeling like I might regret chosing just marketing and not doing something with education. So when I tell my friends and family about interdisciplinary studies I can tell them that I am graduating college without any regrets.

  30. My name is Julie Fishpaugh (fish-paw). I am 28 years old. I was born in Raleigh, NC but have been in Volusia County since I was four years old. No kids as of yet, but my boyfriend and I do have four cats and a dog. I’m in my junior year here at UCF, and my areas of study are Communications (more specifically radio/television), Letters and Modern Languages (creative writing), with a minor in Marketing. Some courses I plan to take are Broadcast Management, Scriptwriting, and Entertainment Marketing. I think these courses will be very beneficial towards my future goal of working in the television entertainment industry.

@Wayne Bannatyne: Good luck with raising two daughters. I am the youngest of three girls, who are all close in age, and let me just say that the teenage years were loads of enjoyment.

@Veronica Alonso: You sound like you have a very good plan for your future, and a back-up plan. It is a great idea to have a back-up plan, especially in these times. I, also, have a lawyer in my family. My middle sister just started her own practice in Daytona Beach this past year
