Final week together : Week 10

Guys I am sad to say this will be our last week together!!!! It has been awesome hearing everyones thoughts, the few that were negative and the wonderful ones that empowered fellow peers. If anything, just know that this assignment affected everyone in some way...if nothing else it reinforced someone's ideas.

Alrighty, lets get down to it:
  1. How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?

(For those of you that haven't had a job as of yet, how do you hope to use interdisciplinarity in your career?)

  2. What has been your professional history?

  3. What are your strongest and weakest job skills?

(For example my weakest skill is my assertivness... which is mildly nonexistent!)
  4. What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?

(I can try to participate more in meetings and get my voice heard, as well as not cower when a patron yells at me!)

  5. Name two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.

  6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
(If you havent participated, you can chose to give a hypothetical explanation or tell us why you would like to participate in one)

  7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.

(This connects to last week, dont re-paste! concentrate on your career)

  8. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?

(don't be afraid if it isnt connected....you may not think it is but someone may provide you with an epiphany!)

  9. How have your career goals altered?

(Have anyone of you changed your career goals since you started this degree? (may not have been the cause))
Just for fun... i'd like everyone to try and post a picture of what their career will be! (preferrably more than just clipart! mines below)

Week 9 Personal Philosophy

What is personal philosophy?

“A personal philosophy is a frame of mind that guides your perspectives on all things inyour life. A personal philosophy is a way of life.” (Answers.com)

Welcome to week 9! I am excited about this weeks topic because it is such a important and deep topic, and we can all learn a lot from each other!

Our experiences create our knowledge and memories, and these guide our emotions and reasoning abilities. It is important to have a belief system, which is made up of your own personal values. All of this will make up your attitude and your approach to situations in life! Every decision that you make, reflects who you are. Our personal philosophy will determine the quality of our decisions and ultimately our lives.

Know your personal philosophy and share them this week!

  1. How does your personal philosophy play into your professional life?

  2. Is your personal philosophy interdisciplinary? How so?

  3. Have your career goals evolved? In what way?

Be sure to give feedback to at least one peer this week. This week is a great topic to learn from each other and give your peers positive feedback!

Week 8 Evidence

    What is evidence?

Evidence is used in police stations in order to prove a case. Without evidence, the charges would be left to hearsay. Evidence plays a important role in ensuring that justice is done, and that the truth is upheld.

Another word for evidence is proof. Proof of our experience is important to facilitate and strengthen our e-portfolio to the audience. Evidence helps to portray details and gives the audience the opportunity to see into your past experiences.

  1. How will your e-Portfolio demonstrate your interdisciplinarity?

  2. How do you plan to portray your strengths?

  3. What is the audience / purpose you're thinking of targeting?

  4. How do you envision your e-Portfolio looking like? What about it would you like to stand out?

  5. What kind of evidence are you planning to use in your e-portfolio?

Every one has been giving great feedback! Keep up the good work!

Week 7 Reflection

Welcome to week 7! We are more than half way through the semester!
This week we will be discussing 'Reflection', and the role that it plays in our
Interdisciplinary experience.

Reflection is important in the process of understanding self. Reflection involves reasoning, evaluating, and these are especially applicable when we are faced with conflicting problems and perspectives. When problem solving in our professional and personal lives, to reflect is important in order to have confidence in our decisions and in our self-concept. Interdisciplinary involves being able to see the bigger picture, and learning from our experience.

For your post, answer the following:

1. What does reflection mean to you? How is description different?
2. How does reflection play into your Interdisciplinary?
3. Share how you will incorporate reflection when developing your e-portfolio.

Feel free to leave your peers feedback that is positive and constructive!
We can all learn from each other!

Week 5 Cover Letters and Resume

Having a degree in IS will take some explaining. This is why it is important to be able to show potential employers what you and your degree will bring to the company. A resume is going to be your first impression to an organization so it needs to effectively but briefly show your qualifications. Another important document that will help showcase who you are is the cover letter. In times when employers are getting numerous resumes for a single position, cover letters are crucial in making you stand out. This is a great place to expand on your major and explain your specific course studies. It gives a better understanding of who you are to the potential employer by highlighting your goals, why you are applying for this job, and why you are the person who should be hired.

This week we are going to share ideas on cover letters and resumes. For those of you who already have experience with creating cover letters and resumes, please share some information that you have found helpful in the past. And for those of you who are less experienced, make sure to ask questions. Let’s make this an interactive week to benefit everyone!

  • What are ways your resume can highlight your interdisciplinarity?
  • What are some questions about cover letters you've have?
  • Share your best cover letter
  • What are questions about resumes that you have and/or share some advice?
  • Share any resources you've found about cover letters and/or resumes.

Week 4 Research Skills & Interdisciplinary Problem Solving

In one form or another, research is a part of our everyday lives. Some “projects” are less time consuming than others and some are less complex. No matter what you do, whether you work full or part time, are a parent, sibling, significant other, or just a student, you are solving problems in all aspects of your life.

This week we are going to focus on research from an interdisciplinary perspective. The following questions are here to help get your brain going so feel free to expand on this topic besides just answering the questions below. As always, you all are doing great in making contributions to this blog. Thank you for your input!

  • How do we use research in our everyday lives? in school? at work?
  • Which specific skills are used when completing a research project?
  • How might these skills be translated towards future employment?
  • How might your ability to solve problems from an interdisciplinary perspective be valuable to a future employer? current employer?
  • Create a potential (fictitious but believable) work scenario where your research and problem solving skills as an interdisciplinary thinker might come into play.
